Lewan - Bannu's 5,000-Year-Old Archaeological Heritage
Lewan, located in District Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is one of Pakistan's most important prehistoric archaeological sites. Dating from approximately 4000 to 2000 BCE, the site provides compelling evidence that the Bannu Valley supported organized communities long before the emergence of the mature Indus Valley Civilization. Archaeological investigations have revealed that Lewan functioned as a specialized industrial and manufacturing center rather than merely a residential settlement. Today, Lewan stands as a remarkable testament to the ingenuity of the ancient inhabitants of the Bannu Valley. Its archaeological record demonstrates that this region was an important center of innovation, craftsmanship, and long-distance exchange more than five millennia ago. Despite its exceptional historical significance, Lewan remains largely unknown and inadequately protected. This invaluable cultural heritage deserves urgent conservation, scientific research, and responsible tourism development.
